Fly to Hobart, Tasmania’s charming capital, where you’ll begin your tour of this fascinating island. In Hobart itself, you’ll find a city with plenty to set it apart from those of mainland Australia. Home to handsome British-colonial buildings and the outstanding market at Salamanca Place, it’s ideal for exploring on foot, and offers plenty for those seeking cultural treasures and culinary delights.

Its natural attractions are equally impressive. At the Mount Field National Park, you’ll discover the remarkable Russell Falls, while Lake St Clair has the distinction of being the country’s deepest fresh water lake.

A lunch cruise on the Gordon River sets you amongst the region’s dense rainforest and you’ll learn about the harsh penal conditions at the former prison on Sarah Island - a place that struck terror into the hearts of the convicts sent there.

At the Cradle Mountain National Park you could spot a number of the island’s native creatures, from Tasmanian Devils to wombats, while wedge-tailed eagles soar in the skies above.

Moving on to Launceston, you’ll find one of the country’s oldest cities, brimming with history and the occasional Art Deco gem. Just north-west of the city is the Bridestowe Lavender Estate, whose mauve-coloured fields stretching into the distance are a sight to behold. Later on, you’ll arrive at Bicheno where you could take an optional tour to visit the small penguin colony on the coast.

Enjoy the wonders of Freycinet National Park, with its jagged mountains, before spending your last full day at Port Arthur’s former penal colony, now an open-air museum.
