Experience an exciting glacier snow coach ride and the vast wild beauty of Jasper National Park

Make the amazing journey north along the affectionately known Icefields Parkway, a route stretching from Lake Louise to Jasper National Park, littered with dozens of ancient glaciers, cascading waterfalls, dramatic rock spires and majestic mountains. Experience a thrilling snow coach ride along the Athabasca Glacier and the dramatic skywalk at the stunning Columbia Icefields before heading on to Jasper National Park.

For well over a century, visitors have discovered beauty beyond imagination and memorable experiences at Jasper National Park, where its vast wilderness is the home of shimmering glaciers, crystalline lakes, thundering waterfalls and deep-cut canyons. Here you’ll join the Athabasca River, which flows along dramatic icefields and through gorges and may spot wildlife on the shores or adjacent marshes. Marvel at magnificent Mount Robson and the semi-arid ranch lands of Kamloops

Heading along the Yellowhead Highway, you can’t miss stunning Mount Robson, at 3,954 metres, the highest point in the Canadian Rockies and a colossal peak that has wowed visitors for centuries. As the south face is clearly visible from the Highway, you’ll be able to capture some amazing photographs here. We then drive deep into the interior of British Columbia, along the Thompson River and through the Shuswap Highlands, before reaching the riverside city of Kamloops. The surrounding semi-arid ranch lands of the interior plateau and rugged, desert-like valleys revealing deep gorges and sandstone canyons, are in stark contrast to the previous days’ terrain.

From ‘Cowboy Country’ to the Pacific Coast and vibrant Vancouver

We leave behind the dusty, rolling ‘Cowboy Country’ of Kamloops and follow the dramatic course of the Thompson and Fraser Rivers, where the road clings to sheer canyon walls pounded by turbulent waters. Approaching the Pacific Coast, the canyon gently opens into a broad fertile valley with mountainous backdrops.

Our final destination is Vancouver, a sophisticated cityscape framed by coastal mountains on the fringes of British Columbia’s wild interior. You’ll soon get familiar with this vibrant seaside city, visiting Stanley Park, one of North America’s largest urban green spaces, to admire its striking collection of totem poles, or strolling the cobbled streets of Gastown, admiring quaint 20th-century brick buildings. Alaskan cruise ports are small cities with their own distinctive personalities – and that includes Ketchikan. Resting at the southern end of Alaska’s Inside Passage, Ketchikan is your gateway to the wild landscapes and seascapes of Misty Fjords National Monument. Dubbed the world’s canned salmon capital, Ketchikan is a hub for fishing and outdoor sports and home to three tribes of Northwest Coast Indians – a great spot to learn more about the native local culture. Ketchikan boasts more totem poles than anywhere else in the world, evident in the colourful, hand-carved totems lining the city’s streets and parks and at the Saxman Native Village. Be captivated by Sitka’s Alaskan small-town charm and resident orange-beaked puffins

Our next port of call presents offers the very best of off-the-beaten-track Alaska. A hidden beauty on Baranhof Island, Sitka faces the Pacific Ocean, towered over by Mount Edgecumbe, a dormant volcano with a similar shape to Japan’s Mount Fuji and snowy peaks that rank amongst the state’s most postcard-worthy scenes. Sitka’s small-town charm originates from a unique blend of Russian, Tlingit and American history, while its rare wildlife ranges from Saint Lazaria Island’s orange-beaked puffins to the Alaska Maritime Refuge’s 40 million seabirds. Kayak alongside swimming sea otters in the Sitka Sound or fly-fish for the planet’s biggest halibut: in Sitka, the midnight sun never seems to set on adventure!

Day 11

Voyage through the incredible Endicott Arm Fjord and live the ‘wild life’ in historic Juneau

From the wee hours, we’ll journey through one of Alaska’s lesser-known gems, Endicott Arm Fjord, marking the southern edge of Fords Terror Wilderness area. Cruising through this stunning 30-mile-long stretch, you’ll be in awe of the surrounding granite cliffs, mountain valleys and gushing waterfalls. Drifting icebergs, deep blue waters and spectacular tidewater glaciers only add to this natural spectacle’s appeal. Endicott Arm is one of the planet’s largest breeding grounds for harbour seals, which you may glimpse splashing in icy waters near the ship.

The finale is a prime front-row view of Dawes Glacier; standing over 182-metres-tall and a half-mile wide, this active icecap is renowned for its spectacular calving displays, resulting in massive, chunky icebergs floating in the surrounding waters. Later on, you’ll arrive at Juneau. Framed by Mount Juneau and Mount Roberts, Alaska’s remote state capital makes a perfect base to immerse yourself in nature. Memorable wildlife encounters extend from spotting sea lions and brown bears to whale watching in Auke Bay Harbour.
